The age of the monolithic Rails app is drawing to a close. Building out scalable, responsive, and distributed applications can be a challenge... So we'll talk about how Rack and other tools can make life much easier.
One big Rails app can be viewed as a single point of failure. If you want your system to be highly available this is simply unacceptable. So, breaking your app up into multiple pieces is (at some point) necessary. So, I intend to talk a bit about the theories of Distributed Systems... (the CAP theorem, Harvest vs Yield, etc)... Then move on to practical applications. At Scribd, we've started breaking apart our big Rails app into a single Rails app and many small Rack apps. I'll talk about communication between those apps, as well as how to use Nginx to generate pages from multiple apps concurrently. We'll also talk about how to handle service failures gracefully... So when one service fails, only that small portion of your site is affected.
