In this class we will be getting people up and running with nokogiri and mechanize. We'll discuss parsing and data extraction techniques, including the use of XPath and CSS selectors for extraction languages. We will learn to use mechanize to extract data from websites that require logins or specific cookies, and the various pitfalls therein. We will also be discussing testing strategies for different web scraping situations. This class will include a lab period so that students may get hands on experence with the different tools being discussed. Basic ruby knowledge is required, but you don't need to be an expert!
